What dye do I use if I have black hair and want purple highlights?

if your hair is really dark you will have to bleach it to lift the dark color, then you should use a purple rinse on top of the bleached highlights.

I heard that the grape Kool-aid works for purple highlights, but honestly have a professional do it for this type color. You want it done right.

Because your hair is dark, you'll have to bleach it first.

BUT, get a hairdresser to do this, because you may

A) damage your hair

B) go very wrong.

Have fun =]

dont get purple hi lights, get your hair like super layered and big side bangs, and then dye the top black and skunk the bottom bright purple

One way you can do it is by bleaching the parts of your hair that you want to dye, and then dye them purple so that it shows up. With black hair it's practically impossible to get anything to show up without bleaching. :( Beware though! Bleaching will dry out your hair and make it weak, so be sure to have a good shampoo and conditioner which nourishes hair and locks in color.

Go to a professional..only because you'll have to bleach the highlight area first, then dye it.

Purple dye alone doesn't have 'bleach' or any lightening abilities - you need to lighten the black. It's like taking a pen and trying to draw on black paper - it doesn't work.

That's for bold highlights. There's a dye by Loreal, and it's black but has a purple hue in the sunlight - that's a little more subtle but it will work on your black hair.

You can just use the purple black hair dye in the box...

I just did this last week! -If your hair is naturally black, go to a beauty supply shop and get #40 bottle of developer and a packet of powder bleach-if you have died your hair black recently, I would go with a #20 developer has it is less harsh on your hair-follow the directions on the package for mixing and developing.

I just kind of painted the outside layer of my hair with the bleach using a tinting brush, washed it out after it got blond, let my hair dry, and applied Manic Panic Purple Haze to the hair i just lightened. Punky Color brand is OK, but I really prefer Directions brand if you can find it in your area.

put on a plastic cap, hit it with a hair dryer for about 20 minutes, then I let it sit on my head for about an hour after that. Rinse and Viola!

You will probably need to touch up the purple once a week and bleach it once every six weeks or so.

I dyed my hair bright black and got 'N Tense Purple from Sally's. I put streaks in and it looked great. The 'N Tense is a bleach and color deposit in one step. It takes 15-30 minutes to process. If your hair is natural then only 15. If it's dyed black then it may take longer, also start at the ends when applying and end at the roots if it's dyed black. I used the red on a friends hair and she didn't tell me her hair had dye in it and her roots turned out lighter than the rest.

I have tried all brands of unnatural colors and this worked best and lasted the longest since it bleaches too.
