Do's and Don't's of Hair Highlighting?

My daughter just got her brunette hair highlighted with chunky blonde streaks. We're curious to know what we can and cannot do with her hair now.

Can she go into a pool any time soon? She just got her hair done today - should she wait a few days before going into a pool or is it ok to do it anytime?

Also, does she have to wait before she can wash her hair again (24 hours? 48 hours? No wait at all?)?

Her hair was done by a friend's sister and I'm unable to contact her directly to find out the answers.

If anyone has experience with highlighting hair and can let us know what the "rules" are we'd appreciate it greatly.

Don't use the blondes shampoos and gels. They have dyes in them to make blonde hair have its spunk, but only with haighlights, it would mess it up with the different dyes. Dont wash it to often. But thats all, just like your normal hair.

And it would probably be okay to wash her hair again in 24 hours. I would use shampoo that is sepciafically for highlighted hair though.

You have gorgeous hair! I would suggest just a few caramel highlights and see how you like them. Put them under the "part," so when the hair grows out it's not so noticeable.

Golden blond would look great, but make sure your hairdresser knows what you want. Make sure they won't give you stripey highlights, get an even look all over your head. It will look great!

I'm getting my hair highlighted later this week, and would like to know how long it takes for this to be done.

I did have it highlighted around six years ago, but I don't remember roughly how long it took.

I know the foil is used when I saw it done at the salon I go to, to another customer (where I got the idea) but I was not able to stay and see how long the entire process took (I only saw just the reference picture the customer had brought in and they were foiling her hair as I paid and left).

My hair now essentially looks just how it does in my avatar here on Yahoo! - That length and thickness, although it is a mahogany color.

If the hair is being highlighted through a cap as opposed to being highlighted with foils, the cap method is usually faster.

The processing time also comes into consideration, given that people閳ユ獨 hair will process at different rates of speed depending on the strength of the highlighting mixture, and the porosity and color of the hair being highlighted. Hair with low porosity is considered resistant and will require more processing time to achieve the level of lightness desired (which is also a factor to consider).

In the most general of terms, given median averages for all factors considered, a highlighting service can take anywhere from 1-3 hours, including styling time. Naturally, shorter hair will likely be at the lower end of the scale, but not always.

The length of time you should wait before getting them touched up depends largely on the condition of your hair. Any chemical process can have an adverse affect on your hair, and applying a color process on top of hair that has already been subjected to a chemical process runs a higher risk of damaging the hair. Use head and shoulders it strips your hair of the colour, for the best results keep it in your hair for 7 mins everytime you wash!

i actually had the same problem not too long ago. The best for me was to get a toner done on it which just makes the color not as intense. Its not too pricey, I paid $15, and it was definatley worth it. Most salons will do it and it doesn't take long so it shouldn't be hard to get an appointment pronto.

Please do not try to do this yourself. I know it's expensive but you really need an appointment with a good hairdresser or you could end up with a very strange hair colour.

You might get away with just a toner, depending on the shade %26amp; condition of the highlights, but there are professional colour erasers that will remove just about any colour. However this is only available in salons and must be done by a qualified person, as these chemicals are very strong and have the potential to ruin your hair if you dont know how to use them properly!

Some how, i hate the color red for hair... I never have and will never ever put red color in my hair... That hideous and so unfeminine. I mean people mostly dislike even natural redheads, except if they are really pretty. So i dont understand whats the obsession over color red. I say be as close natural color. My friend has light brown hair with Redish Orange highlights, her hair looked so good!!!!!!!! But I don't know if it would look good with DARK Red highlights. How about you highlight a little part of your hair Dark Red and another Redish Orange? You can see which one you like, and pick; and snip off the ones you highlighted and the rest will be the one you picked!

i just did this last week.

u have to bleach it 1st.

use wella bleach from sally beauty supply.

leave it on for 45 min to an hour and 15 min.

until it becomes a honey blonde color.

then wash out the bleach and dry ur hair.

then find a pretty red hair color that u like and put it
